DuBois, Pennsylvania-Pennsylvania Heights DuBois, AmServ DuSan, and DuBois EMS recently joined forces to provide DuBois Volunteer Fire Brigade with a Stop Bleeding® course. On October 12th, a course to stop the bleeding was held at the Fire Company of District 4, with 29 volunteer firefighters taking part. Dr. William Hoff, MD, medical director and trauma/general surgeon of Penn Highlands Healthcare's trauma program, led the class.

The cessation of bloodshed stemmed from research on military bleeding control, but it accelerated in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

In the Stop the Bleeding course, participants were educated on what to do in the event of life-threatening bloodshed. Firefighters were educated in identifying life-threatening bleeding and how to effectively control it. In the class, the students learned the quick actions to stop bleeding: (1) How to apply pressure with gloved hands and how to apply pressure correctly; (2) How to properly bandage the wound and press; (3) How to use tourniquet correctly.

Vicki Feldman, EMS Outreach and Injury Prevention Coordinator at Penn Highlands Trauma Services, said: “We are pleased to provide every fire station in the participating department with a blood stop kit, which will help them in the event of an accident.” “Everyone The bleeding stop kit includes: instruction manual on hemostasis, tourniquet, rapid hemostasis hemostatic dressing, mini marker, a pair of protective gloves, a compression bandage and two (2) three-layer masks." Penn Highlands DuBois Trauma Service is DuBois Every fire truck of the Volunteer Fire Department donated a blood-stop kit.
